Artwork exhibition unveiled at Northampton following college link-up

Dozens of spectacular pieces of artwork have gone on display at London Northwestern Railway's Northampton Station following a link-up with a local college.

The colourful creations have been installed on the footbridge linking platforms at the site after station managers David Flanagan and Daniel Dalmonego resolved to brighten up the concourse as a way of welcoming passengers back to the railway after lockdown.

With the local Northampton College unable to hold its annual art exhibition due to the pandemic, a partnership was formed to allow students to display their work to the public.

The artwork is on display on the footbridge over the platforms thanks to the ingenuity of station artisan Simon Wagner, who devised a way to safely and securely install the pieces.

Sophie Pennington, from Northampton College, said:

“It was hugely disappointing for our students to work so hard on their amazing creations and have to forgo the opportunity to show them to the wider community, so I was absolutely thrilled when the station agreed to host an art installation.

“It is even more exciting that this project has developed into an ongoing collaboration, with rotating displays of artwork throughout the year. Our students are over the moon that their work can also now receive further acclaim due to it being displayed in a public domain.”

Station duty operations manager David Flanagan said:

“We’re giving the people of Northampton and visitors alike the chance to view stunning artwork and we’re enabling local students to display their hard work - all in the backdrop of our lovely station. It’s a win-win.”
