Press release -

Celebration will mark 180 years of Tamworth station

A celebration marking 180 years of Tamworth railway station is being held next week.

The station was originally opened on 12 August 1839 by officials from the Birmingham and Derby Junction Railway and has continued to serve passengers ever since.

Today the station is operated by London Northwestern Railway, whose staff are behind the celebration event on Monday 12 August 2019.

Honor Evans, duty station manager, said: "Tamworth station has faithfully served the community since the very start of Queen Victoria's reign and we are looking forward to celebrating an incredible milestone.

"With frequent, convenient services from Tamworth on our route from Crewe to London Euston, it is no surprise that well over a million journeys are made using station every year."

The celebration event will feature a cake sale with produce made by staff and passengers, a prize raffle and a storyteller to explain to visitors about the history of the station.

Raffle prizes up for grabs include theme park tickets, a go-karting experience and train tickets.

The festivities get under way at 10am and all proceeds raised at the event will be donated to the Alzheimer's Society, which is London Northwestern Railway's chosen charity of the year.
