Rail passengers in Wolverhampton invited to show support for Ukraine crisis

Rail passengers in Wolverhampton can show their support for the Ukraine crisis at a fundraising event at the city’s railway station this week.

Staff at the station, which is operated by West Midlands Railway (WMR), will be holding a raffle and fundraising drive on the main concourse from 11am to 3pm on Friday 25 March.

Visitors will have the chance to donate to support victims of the Ukraine crisis and buy a raffle ticket with prizes including train tickets and shopping vouchers.

Mel Bryett, Wolverhampton station manager, said: “The whole team at the station have been touched by the events in Ukraine and wanted to do something to show our support and raise money.

“After floating the idea of a fundraising event we have had fantastic support and enthusiasm from across the city and the wider rail industry. I am sure our passengers will join us in giving generously to the cause.”

Legendary Wolverhampton Community Radio presenter Dicky Dodd will be on hand to entertain passengers at the event, which is being supported by representatives from Avanti West Coast, CrossCountry, Midland Metro Alliance and Wolverhampton BID.

As well as the raffle and collections, fundraising activities will see WMR staff and special guests taking on challenges in a slime-filled bathtub courtesy of Wolverhampton-based Four Ashes Plumbing Supplies.

All proceeds from the event will be donated to the Disasters Emergency Committee Ukraine Appeal.

The event follows last week’s national announcement that Ukrainian refugees arriving in Britain will be provided with free rail travel to their final destination.
