Vintage artwork unveiled at Small Heath station in Birmingham

Passengers using West Midlands Railway services from Small Heath in Birmingham are enjoying a vintage feeling thanks to a new community art project.

A new poster highlights the fast journey time - as little as four minutes - for passengers to reach the city centre and has been designed in art deco style to reflect that the station first opened in 1908.

The project is the first in a series of improvements at the station, which also serves Sparkbrook, and is one of 18 stations along the Shakespeare Line to be 'adopted' by the local community.

Fay Easton, head of stakeholder and community for West Midlands Railway, said:

"It has been a privilege to work with the Friends of the Shakespeare Line and local councillors on this stunning community art project. We are committed to supporting communities in the areas we serve and we will continue to work with local people to celebrate the history and heritage of Small Heath and Sparkbrook."

Fraser Pithie, from Friends of the Shakespeare Line, said:

"We are so pleased to see this artwork unveiled and things starting to happen at the station which serves Small Heath and Sparkbrook. This is a significant step for two communities to reconnect with their railway station - community rail activity at its best."

Councillor Waseem Zaffar MBE, from Birmingham City Council, said:

"Local ideas such as this which are brought to life by community volunteers show how much difference can be made to local environments and help us deliver Birmingham's transport plan, as well as supporting both our clean air and 'road to zero' carbon objectives."
