West Midlands Railway launches search for engineering apprentices

West Midlands Railway (WMR) has opened applications for its next cohort of engineering apprentices.

Coinciding with National Apprenticeship Week, WMR has launched its search for four candidates to join its industry-leading engineering apprenticeship scheme, starting from September 2026.

The four-year salaried scheme offers a mix of classroom and practical training with the opportunity to work from WMR’s main depot in Tyseley. Apprentices will learn to service mechanical and electrical systems used across the modern rail industry, providing skills for life.

WMR employs dozens of apprentices and graduates each year as part of its commitment to training the next generation of railway workers.

This recruitment scheme follows WMR’s £70million investment into redeveloping Tyseley depot to boost its capacity and modernise equipment. The site was officially reopened by Mayor of the West Midlands Richard Parker last October.

John Doughty, engineering director at WMR, said: “I left school at 16 and started my career as a railway apprentice. I knew I was interested in the railway, and I wanted to gain work experience while learning new skills, so the scheme suited me perfectly and set me up for a lifelong career which I still love decades on. I’d encourage anyone who enjoys practical work and learning new skills to consider applying as it could set you up with a job for life.”
