Rail passengers in the West Midlands are being reminded they must wear a face covering when travelling on public transport from today (Monday 15 June).
In order to help reduce the spread of coronavirus, new rules mean passengers must bring a face covering with them if they wish to travel on trains.
West Midlands Railway is reminding its customers they should only use public transport for necessary journeys when they have no other way to travel.
Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director for West Midlands Railway, said:
“Today is a significant day for our customers and colleagues and these new rules will help ensure those who need to use public transport can do so with confidence.
“Using a face covering will boost the other measures we have in place to keep customers safe, including enhanced cleaning regimes and social distancing measures at our busiest stations.
“By working together, following the rules and only using public transport when we really need to, we can all play our part in helping our communities recover.”
Advice on how to make a face covering and instructions for using one are available on the government website here. Children aged under 11 and those with breathing difficulties are exempt from the rule.
As well as wearing a face covering, West Midlands Railway is urging passengers to buy their tickets online, wash their hands before and after travelling and to respect social distancing whenever possible.
